New Year, New Chapter: How Can I Support Employees Experiencing Career Change? By Charlotte Billington – Career Transition Coach

The start of a New Year is a fresh start – a time to take stock, create goals and focus on what you wish to achieve over the next year.

At Transition Peak we will be reviewing the last year, our achievements, interest and key learnings as well as focusing on plans moving forward.

For those individuals who are planning a career change or for those within a company supporting others experiencing change, here are some tips to assist with a smooth, planned and successful career transition.

First off – focus on your mind

If you can relax, have a positive mindset and work through a planned process, you can be reassured that you will give the goals your full attention. If you need assistance, you could do several things. A) Think this through while being honest with yourself and do whatever you need to get you into the right frame of mind. B) Speak to a coach, counselor or a mentor. C) Look at our ‘Spring Forward Emotionally’ module which focuses on getting you in the right mindset.

Self-analysis is the next step

Once you are in the best place, similar to the athlete’s top condition, you will be ready to do the work needed. Self-analysis is the next step. Spend time on this. Time and time again I speak to new clients who have never (ever) had the opportunity to do this. To me self-analysis is a critical part of the process. Spend time thinking through your strengths, values and analysing your career to date. This part should take time and reflection; it is a critical step towards career satisfaction.  Our Self-Analysis Module is a straight-to-the-point practical exercise book to work this through.

Now research and learn

So, we are in the right place, we have done our self-analysis, what is next? Now is the time to research and learn. It may be that you have a few areas of interest which is fine. Talk to people in the area or areas you are interested in, look at people’s bios on LinkedIn, are there any courses (ideally recommended ones) that you can take? Can you gain some work experience in that area (either within your current company on a project or working with another department?) or on a temporary, or contract basis? Is there a stepping stone job that you could consider that gets you to where you want to be in the long term? Are there industry blogs, magazines, groups you can access? Immerse yourself and use your network to help you. There is so much advice and information out there waiting for you.

Identify those interesting job specifications

Once you are clearer and knowledgeable, the next stage is to identify job specifications that you may be interested in. Once you have done this you need to make sure that your marketing material (Your CV/LinkedIn) match as closely as possible (whilst remaining honest) to the jobs you are interested in.
